Fargo centered the Henry on the foremost silhouette and fired. The Henry cracked and spat lead and the shape flung its arms wide and pitched to the earth.

The other Comancheros never slowed.

Fireflies flashed, attended by the boom of thunder. The packhorse whinnied and went down.

Fargo realized the Ovaro might be hit. He vaulted up and reined toward their attackers. A jab of his spurs, and he galloped to meet them headlong. The first was on him almost before he could blink. One-handed, he swung the Henry like a club and clipped the rider on the jaw. The man tumbled. Suddenly he was in a ring of Comancheros. He threw the Henry at one as the man sought to take aim. The Colt filled his hand, and he shot at a bearded face and then at a Comanchero wearing a sombrero. He thumbed the hammer and fired and thumbed the hammer and fired and then he was alone in a ring of riderless horses.

The man he had struck with the Henry was back on his feet and holding a revolver. “I’ve got you, you son of a bitch.”

From out of the dark loomed Chaku. The Katonza’s heavy war club described an arc and the top of the Comanchero’s head caved in with an audible crunch, hat and all.

“I’m obliged,” Fargo said.

The rest of the Comancheros were dead. Amazingly, the only casualty on their side was the packhorse.

“We’re safe now, right?” Adam asked. “They won’t send any more after us now that we’ve killed these.”

“You helped, did you?” Fargo responded.

Evie said in annoyance, “Don’t be a bigger fool than usual, Adam. Santos won’t rest until he catches us. Every last Comanchero in their band is after us by now. These were just the ones who caught their horses first. We won’t be safe until the Staked Plain country is well behind us.”

“She’s right,” Emery remarked. “She’s always right.”

“Oh, please,” Evie said.

Their bickering was fraying at Fargo’s nerves. “Pick weapons. A revolver and a rifle for each of you.”

Emery moved to the bodies.

“I’m not much of a shot,” Evie said, “but I’ll help best I can.”

Adam stood there.

“What are you waiting for?” Fargo demanded. “A dead Comanchero to get up and give his revolver to you?”

“I don’t feel right around dead people.”

Emery snorted in derision. “No wonder Evie likes me more. You are next to worthless.”

“Please don’t,” Evie said.

Chaku motioned at the three of them and said to Fargo, “I hit with club, our ears have rest, eh?”

Fargo laughed.

“I don’t think that was funny,” Emery said. “Wait until I tell Pa. He won’t think it was funny, either.”

“Worthless is contagious,” Fargo said, and stiffened when the faint sound of three shots wafted to them from the west. Almost immediately someone answered with three shots from the south. Then there were three more from the north.

“What was that all about?” Adam wondered.

“Signals,” Fargo said. The Comancheros had split up to search for them. The group to the west had heard their clash and signaled to the groups to the south and the north.
